We had the rare privilege of speaking with its owner, Ryuji Miyauchi, and hearing his remarkable story firsthand. Even within dekotora—Japan’s distinctive culture of elaborately customized trucks—Ryukomaru radiates an almost otherworldly presence, as if transcending land, sea, and sky to reach into the cosmos itself. Catch sight of it by chance on a city street or highway, and its one-of-a-kind form instantly commands your attention. Countless moving lights drift across the road. Stainless-steel parts jut outward, reflecting the cold, functional illumination of the highway in a muted glow. Cutting through the air with its distinctive exhaust note, a large truck sways gently along the left lane at its own pace. This is dekotora — the crystallization of Japan’s unique custom truck culture.\u003Cbr>Each truck is shaped by the owner’s individual sensibility and an accumulation of countless hours of hands-on work. No two are ever the same. Encountering one unexpectedly on the road clears away any trace of sleepiness. Without thinking, you ease the car alongside for a moment, careful not to disturb the driver, simply to watch this moving artwork a little longer. Among these machines exists one that stands apart. A truck carrying an atmosphere so unusual it seems to move beyond land, sea, and sky — something that feels almost cosmic. For more than twenty years, one photographer has continued to chase its light. One man keeps the light running. One man keeps photographing it.
