The sight struck him instantly. From that moment on, photographing dekotora became a lifelong pursuit. At night, the road becomes a black studio. When the engine begins to rumble, the truck wakes from stillness, lights flickering on as if something living has stirred inside it. No two faces are ever the same. Hata\u003C/p>\u003Cp>has continued to follow those fleeting moments — the brief appearance that exists only in that instant. What appears through his lens is not decoration. It is time. Over more than thirty years, as travelled more than two million kilometres. Its surfaces carry the marks of labour, repetition, and the quiet pride of a working driver. It breaks. It is repaired. It returns to the road. Through that repetition, what emerges is not merely a form, but a presence. To\u003C/p>\u003Cp>pour extraordinary effort into a vehicle built simply to work — Hata once described this as “an endearing contradiction.” There is no final form. Only time, accumulating honestly. As regulations tightened during the Heisei era and the language of corporate compliance began to spread, dekotora gradually came to be described as an “endangered species.” When Hata published his photo book DEKOTORA in 2022, in the middle of the pandemic, the intention\u003C/p>\u003Cp>was not nostalgia. What he hoped readers would feel was something closer to a return to the origins of work and survival — the energy that once carried dekotora across Japan during the country’s postwar recovery. Ryuji Miyauchi, the owner of Ryukomaru, repeats it quietly: “I’ve probably got five more years with this truck.” A sense of urgency seeps through those words. It is the weight that gave the book its presence. The book was never meant to be consumed lightly. Turning each page becomes an encounter with time itself. Ryūkomaru does not shine simply to be seen. It shines because it had no choice but to shine.
